In other news, it's raining and cold outside and not so much fun. I was supposed to be cleaning out all the darned leaves out of the pool today, but no such luck (darn!!) So I'll be writing the sequel today--and getting close to the end, too! Lots more adventure and heartache in this book, plus new fun characters to fall in love with.

Happy Holidays and Gift Giving/Receiving

Hope everyone is getting to spend time with family and friends this holiday season! I'm with my sister and brother-in-law and got to see my mom today for the first time in more than six months. And with 6 nieces and nephews there's not much time for writing! They are quite a bunch of kids. Funny, loud, caring, sweet.

TGIF! In a very big way!

My partner is going to be on vacation for 10 days, I can't wait! I'll be writing away on book number three. Number two is on hold because of NANOWRIMO. But they'll both be out there as sequels to "In Your Eyes." And the first book is now available electronically (in case you missed that) for just $2.99! Writing, writing, writing. Going to be at the editing space next, which is the crucial part of the whole process. Listening to REM and other oldies on Pandora. What a great service! Was getting tired of Xmas music on the radio and my own music on my iPhone.

Going postal - NO! I mean, going electronic!

© In Your Eyes: Excerpt 2

I kept standing in front of my bunk, waiting for her to say something to me. “Amiru,” she said in her commander’s voice. “Come with me, please.”

I turned to make sure my space was in order, then pulled on my coat, flipped up the hood, and followed her out into the rain.

We sloshed through the wet grass and muddy trails for some time before she spoke again. “Renna, I heard that you spent last evening with Lieutenant Fargo,” she said at last, her words surprising me.

“We played cards,” I responded. “Since I couldn’t go to the fire.”

Her hood moved in a nod. “I just want to make sure that you’re keeping things, uh, well, we want you to remain on the level of friends is all,” she said over her shoulder.

There weren’t many other folks out at this time, so she spoke openly.

I was a little confused, so I stayed quiet.

“Do you understand?” she stopped and turned to face me. Her black eyes were swirling in the shadow of the hood.

“Not completely,” I admitted. “We are just friends. I don’t know what else you could mean.”

She turned and started walking again. “Innocent girl,” she said as she flipped up the door to her tent and held it open for me to enter.

“Renna’s an innocent girl?” Emma was making her bed when we came into the room.

“She is,” she answered as we took off our coats. I made a face that I wasn’t aware of that made Jean laugh. “Don’t worry, Renna. Things will work out all right, I think.”

“I’m just confused. What’s wrong with me being friends with Cass? I mean, Lieutenant Fargo?”

“Nothing at all,” Emma said and put on her coat. “I’m going to exercise some regulars. Enjoy your day today.”

“You’ll stay with me tonight, and then tomorrow we’ll immerse you with the rest of the regulars. You’ll start your training as soon as we can get organized. Maybe even tomorrow.”

“Training?” I asked with a furrowed brow.

“To be a weather witch. You’ll need training. I’m sure you haven’t received any here?” she asked.

I shook my head, but my brow remained wrinkled.

“You do want to go with us, don’t you?” she asked.

I nodded. “Of course.” I cleared my throat because my voice seemed to be leaving me. “I just didn’t know what to expect.”

“Well, for now, let’s get some rest. The rest of the camp is quiet so it must be pretty late, and we’ll be getting an early start in the morning.” She motioned for me to get into the cot, and I shook my head.

“We can share the cot. We’ll be warmer that way. I won’t hurt you,” she added.

I nodded again and slowly got into the cot and curled up so that I took up as little space as possible. I watched her as she got undressed and crawled over me so that she was in the bed behind me. She didn’t concern herself with taking up space, she stretched out and wrapped herself around my body, and she felt warm and strong. I felt safe, and my muscles started to relax. I stretched out a little bit and allowed myself to be encircled by her strength.

“That’s better,” she whispered into my hair, which was still wet and must not have felt very good.

“My hair,” I said, and I pulled off the kerchief and then pulled the hair up off my neck and onto the top of my head so that it wouldn’t be in her face.

“Thanks,” I could hear the smile in her voice, and feel her warm breath on my neck. She took a deep breath and exhaled on my bare skin. “You smell like the rain,” she said.

“I can’t do much about that,” I said with my own smile, finding it easier to talk to her when I couldn’t see her.

She reached over me one last time to put out the lantern and darkness flooded the room. I could feel her heart beat against my back, and her warm breath on my neck, and I thought that I would never fall asleep. I’d never been so close to anyone before. This felt so good, so comfortable and safe, I wanted to stay awake and enjoy it.

“Will you sleep now?” she asked in the darkness, her voice tickling the tiny hairs on the back of my neck.

I had to clear my throat again. “Probably,” I said, “the rain sounds so soothing,” I made it up off the top of my head. I couldn’t tell her what I’d been thinking. That I’d never been held this way before. That I liked it and didn’t want it to end.

“Good,” she said. “You’re so warm, I’ll probably be asleep in minutes,” she yawned and didn’t say anything else that night.
